How cruise gratuities actually work

Most of the "hidden cost" of cruising isn't hidden at all — it's just billed separately from the fare you saw when booking.

Cruise lines call it different things — a daily gratuity, a service charge, or "crew appreciation" — but the mechanics are the same across every mainstream line. A fixed amount per guest, per day, is added automatically to your onboard account (Royal Caribbean calls this the SeaPass account; other lines call it a folio). It's charged whether you use the dining room every night or barely leave the pool deck, because it's pooled and shared among the crew who keep the ship running: stateroom attendants, dining and bar staff, and behind-the-scenes hotel teams.

This daily charge is separate from — and usually smaller than — what you'll actually spend once drink packages, specialty restaurants, and spa visits are added in, since each of those carries its own 18–20% service charge on top of the menu price.

Prepaid vs. paid onboard

You can usually prepay the full gratuity amount when you book or during online check-in, or let it post to your account automatically each day of the cruise. Prepaying doesn't change the total — it just locks in today's rate and avoids a larger lump sum appearing on your final bill.

Removing or adjusting gratuities

Most lines let you reduce or remove the automatic charge at Guest Services, though they generally discourage it, since dropping it can directly affect crew pay. For the full walkthrough, see our guide on removing or lowering cruise gratuities, and our guide on prepaying gratuities before you sail.

What else carries a service charge onboard

The daily gratuity is only one piece. Here's what else adds up once you're sailing.

Drink packages and bar tabs

An 18% service charge is added to every drink package and pay-as-you-go bar tab. Before you buy one, check what's actually on the menu — see our Royal Caribbean drink menu, NCL bar menu, Princess drink menu, Holland America drink menu, and MSC drinks package prices guides, and our breakdown of whether the cruise drink package is worth it.

Specialty dining and room service

Specialty restaurants typically carry the same 18% charge on top of the cover fee, and most lines now charge a flat delivery fee for room service too. See what's on the menu first in our MSC main dining room menu, NCL main dining room menu, Celebrity Luminae, and MSC room service menu and costs guides.

Spa and salon

Spa treatments generally carry a 20% service charge, and it's easy to forget it's coming when you book a treatment onboard on impulse.

Frequently asked questions

How much are cruise gratuities per day in 2026?

Daily automatic gratuities in 2026 typically run from $16 to $22.50 per guest, per day, depending on the cruise line and cabin type, with suites charged at a higher rate than standard cabins. Royal Caribbean charges $18.50, Carnival $17, Norwegian $20, and Disney around $16, as examples.

Do cruise lines charge gratuities on drink packages?

Yes. Most cruise lines add an 18% to 20% service charge on top of drink packages, bar tabs, specialty dining, room service, and spa or salon purchases, separate from the daily automatic gratuity.

Can I remove or lower my cruise gratuities?

Most cruise lines allow you to adjust or remove automatic gratuities at Guest Services before the last day of the cruise, though the lines generally discourage it since the charge is pooled and distributed among crew. See our full guide on removing or lowering cruise gratuities.

Should I prepay my cruise gratuities before sailing?

Prepaying locks in the current rate and avoids a larger charge appearing on your onboard account at the end of the cruise. It does not change the total amount you pay, just when you pay it. Full walkthrough here: how to prepay cruise gratuities.

Are children charged cruise gratuities?

On most mainstream lines, gratuities are charged per guest aged two and older, regardless of age, so infants under two are typically the only exemption.

Does Virgin Voyages include gratuities in the fare?

It depends on when you booked. Voyages booked before October 7, 2025 may still have gratuities included in the fare. Newer bookings show a separate daily service gratuity of about $20 per Sailor per night prepaid, or $22 per night if paid onboard.

What is not covered by the daily cruise gratuity?

The daily gratuity covers dining, bar, culinary, stateroom, and hotel crew. It does not cover the separate service charge added to drink packages, specialty dining, spa treatments, or the delivery fee charged on room service orders.

How much should I budget for a 7-night cruise beyond the fare?

Beyond the cruise fare, a couple should typically budget $250 to $400 for gratuities alone on a 7-night sailing, plus whatever they plan to spend on drink packages, specialty dining, shore excursions, and spa treatments.

Is the cruise drinks package worth it?

It depends on how much you plan to drink per day. Packages usually break even around 5 to 6 drinks a day once the daily price and its added gratuity are factored in; light drinkers are often better off paying as they go. More detail in our drink package worth-it guide.

How often do cruise lines change their gratuity rates?

Cruise lines typically adjust gratuity rates once or twice a year, often announced with little advance notice. This page is checked quarterly and was last verified September 9, 2026.
